Privacy policy
This policy explains what JiveFinder collects about you, why, who else sees it and what you can do about it. It covers the website and the JiveFinder iPhone app.
Who we are
JiveFinder is run by A Necessary Degree of Clarity Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales, company number 17348822. Our registered office is The Barn, Carlton Drive, North Wootton, King's Lynn, PE30 3QX. We are the data controller for the personal data described here.
For anything about your data, email [email protected].
When you browse without an account
- Where you search from. To show dances near you we need a starting point: a town or postcode you type, a point you pick on the map, or your device's location if you allow it. We use it to work out drive times and to sort results.
- Naming your location. If you share your device's location, your browser asks OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service for the name of the place, so it sends your coordinates to them directly.
- Approximate location from your IP address. If you have not given us a location, we send your IP address to ip-api.com to estimate your town, so the finder opens somewhere sensible and the weather shown is local.
- Things kept in your browser. Your last location, saved searches and favourites when you are signed out stay in your browser's local storage. They are not sent to us unless you sign in and save them to your account.
- Server and security logs. Our hosting and Cloudflare, which protects and speeds up the site, see your IP address and browser details when you visit, as any website does.
Analytics, only if you accept them
If you click Accept on the cookie banner, we set a cookie holding a random identifier (it lasts a year) and record how the finder is used: the starting points and place names of searches, the filters used, and which events, classes and venues are viewed. We also keep a salted one-way hash of your IP address, never the address itself, and your browser type. None of this is linked to your name, email or account. We use it to see where dancers search from and which nights are popular, so we know where to improve coverage.
If you click Decline, nothing is recorded. You can change your mind at any time by clearing your browser data, which removes the identifier and brings the banner back.
If you create an account
- Your email address, used to sign you in and to send the emails you ask for.
- Your name and profile picture, if you sign in with Apple or Google and they share them with us. Apple lets you hide your real email address; if you do, we only see the relay address Apple gives us.
- How you sign in: which methods are linked to your account, and for passkeys the public key your device creates. Passkeys never send us anything that would let someone else sign in as you.
- Sign-in codes, stored only as a one-way hash and valid for 15 minutes.
- Sessions: each signed-in device, with its IP address and browser type, so you can see where you are signed in and sign out everywhere. A session lasts up to 90 days from your last visit.
- What you save: favourite venues, saved places, saved searches and trips, events you mark as going or interested, and your weekly digest settings, including the home postcode and location the digest measures from.
Organisers and listings
JiveFinder lists events that organisers already publish on their own websites and in public dance directories. Listings can include an organiser's name and the contact details they publish. If you run a club and want a listing corrected or removed, claim it or email us.
If you claim a listing, we keep your email address, the website you are claiming and the record of how it was verified, for as long as you manage the listing.
The iPhone app
The app collects the same things as the website when you use the same features. It asks for your location only while you use it, and sends it to us to work out drive times and sort results. It does not track you across other apps or websites, and it contains no advertising.
Why we are allowed to use it
- To provide what you asked for (your account, what you save, the digest): this is necessary to provide the service to you.
- Analytics and your device's location: your consent, which you can withdraw.
- Security, approximate location from your IP, and publishing public listings: our legitimate interest in running a useful, safe finder, balanced against your rights. You can object at any time.
Who else handles it
We do not sell personal data and do not use advertising trackers. These providers handle data for us, or are contacted directly by your browser:
- Hetzner (Germany): hosts our servers and database.
- Cloudflare: delivers and protects the website.
- Portfast (UK): sends our emails, including sign-in codes and the weekly digest.
- Apple and Google: only if you choose them to sign in.
- OpenStreetMap: map tiles and place names; your browser contacts them directly.
- ip-api.com: approximate location from your IP address, as described above.
- Code and font libraries (unpkg, the Tailwind CDN and Google Fonts): your browser downloads parts of the page from them, so they see your IP address.
Some of these providers process data outside the UK. Where they do, the transfer relies on UK adequacy regulations or the standard contractual protections those providers offer.
How long we keep it
- Account data and everything you save: until you delete your account.
- Sessions: up to 90 days from your last visit. Sign-in codes: 15 minutes.
- Analytics records: up to 24 months.
- Claim records: for as long as you manage the listing.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, ask us to restrict or stop using it, or ask for it in a form you can take elsewhere. You can withdraw consent at any time.
To delete your account and everything saved to it, use Delete my account on your account page, or Delete account on the You tab in the app. It takes effect straight away.
For anything else, email [email protected]. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Cookies and local storage
- Essential: a sign-in cookie when you are signed in, a short-lived cookie while you sign in with Apple or Google, and any security cookies Cloudflare sets. These are needed for the site to work.
- Your choices: your cookie choice, last location and signed-out favourites, kept in your browser's local storage.
- Analytics: the random identifier cookie described above, only if you accept.
Children
JiveFinder is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly create accounts for them.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. If a change matters to how we use your data, we will tell signed-in users by email before it takes effect.
